Family Promise is the only sheltering program in Southwest New Jersey that keeps together homeless families with dependent children as they seek a permanent housing solution. A network of local congregations provide overnight shelter for up to four families at a time on a weekly rotating schedule. Families are provided with safe and comfortable shelter, evening meals, companionship, and support. During the day families have access to the Family Day Center in Glassboro, from which they leave for work, school, or day care. Showers, laundry facilities, and computers for homework and job searches are available.
Since 2011 Good Shepherd has served as a support congregation. As a support congregation Good Shepherd assists the Pitman Road Church of Christ when it is their turn to host families for a week. Our team of dedicated volunteers cook and serve dinner, interact with adults and children in the evening, and supervise the site during the night.
Family Case Managers work with all families to set goals and develop a plan that empowers them to return to self-sufficiency. Family Promise utilizes community resources to identify opportunities for jobs, educational opportunities, affordable housing, reliable transportation, dependable daycare, and other services necessary to sustain independence.
Family Promise has enjoyed impressive success moving families through the program into stable housing. Families remain connected to the program for at least two years after moving into their own housing.
