Fall Mini-Stewardship Campaign

Fellow Parish Members,

As the fall season approaches, there are exciting times coming at Good Shepherd with the beginning of a new year for Sunday School, the return of the choir, the start of Confirmation Classes and all of our ministries resuming a full schedule.  Before you know it, the leaves will be falling, and we will be preparing for several events – Crop Walk, Holly Fair, Christmas Pageant, Bishop’s Visitation… It is just an awesome time of anticipation to serve and celebrate our Lord!

This year is particularly special, in that our Discernment Committee – who has been working very diligently all summer – is getting ever closer to presenting a Rector Candidate to the Vestry.

This past late-Spring, the Stewardship Committee did something unprecedented in the Diocese of New Jersey, and held the Annual Stewardship Campaign early in the year. The themed Temple Talks of “It’s God’s Money”, “Stewardship is not fund Raising”, and “First-Fruits Giving”, were well received by many. We received responses from several who had never pledged before, and many others who prayerfully increased their annual giving to our church. However, there were also many regular givers that, for whatever reason, did not respond during the Transformational Stewardship campaign. The Vestry and Stewardship Committee received about 20 responses from the survey that was conducted in August, and each response was read and discussed in the Vestry Meeting – We thank you for that feedback.

Stewardship is not about fund raising, however, the Vestry has an obligation, both to the Parish and to the Diocese, to develop a realistic and responsible budget (a bit earlier than usual this year) as part of preparing for the Presentation of Candidates by the Discernment Committee. For this purpose, the Vestry and Stewardship Committee are called to hold an additional “Mini-Campaign”, during services on October 3-4, giving those parish members that have not yet provided an Estimate of Giving (Pledge Card) another opportunity to do so.

If you have already turned in an Estimate of Giving card either during or following the spring campaign – Thank You!

But if you have not done so, we ask that you prayerfully consider providing an estimate of your offering to the church for 2016, and return the enclosed Estimate of Giving Pledge Card either in the offering plate at services during the weekends of October 3-4 and October 10-11, or to the Parish Office by October 12th.

October 2015 Discernment Committee Update

The Discernment Committee kept up the pace in September and accomplished tremendous progress. We sent teams of three committee members out to visit each of the candidates in their home parish setting. The teams discretely observed a Sunday worship service. They also shared a relaxed meal in conversation with the candidates and their families. The teams returned and reported in detail about their experiences to the entire committee. We then gathered and together made the last big steps in our discernment.

At the end of September, the Discernment Committee met with the Vestry to deliver the Presentation of Candidates. These are the candidates that the Discernment Committee, all sixteen of us to a person, would be confident to call as our next rector. For this presentation we pulled together and presented to the Vestry all of our materials about these final candidates: this included the paperwork that we received from Canon Alvarez at the start, transcripts from our interviews, reports from the tour and dinner teams, reports from the traveling teams, references, and our observations and feelings that support our recommendations.

This is a major transition in our journey to welcome a new rector to Good Shepherd. During October, the Vestry will meet and interview these final candidates and get to know them and their families. The Vestry, guided by the Holy Spirit, will complete the discernment process and call the next Rector of Good Shepherd. The Discernment Committee will remain engaged in a consulting role to support the Vestry in whatever way they need.

We are deeply grateful for the prayers and the respect for confidentiality that our entire congregation has provided through this process. It has been wonderful for us. We now wish to modify these two very important requests to include the Vestry: first that you hold the Vestry and these candidates and their families in your prayers, and second that you all continue to be vigilant in supporting both the Vestry and the Discernment Committee with regard to confidentiality. This has been, and will continue to be, very important for the health of our beautiful parish. We, the Discernment Committee, are honored with the trust you all have given us. We feel the Holy Spirit with us … and we are very excited about the next Rector of Good Shepherd!

O God, you know us better than we know ourselves. Guide the Discernment Committee and the Vestry in our search for a new Rector for Good Shepherd. Empower each one of us to use our unique ministries, to share openly and honestly our thoughts, to respect the opinions of others, and to encourage humility, patience, and joy. Instill in us a vision of the Church’s family; that guided by your Holy Spirit we will be united in love and joyfully accomplish this mission, through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

August 2015 Discernment Committee Update

The Good Shepherd Discernment Committee has had a very busy summer! We began our telephone interviews just a few days after the electricity was restored in Pitman following the big June storm. Meeting several nights a week, the entire committee gathered around a speaker phone in the conference room as the interviews were conducted by Mark Nicolle and two committee members using questions developed by all of us. All the rest of us did our best to listen quietly!

We completed the telephone interviews in July, and moved to the next round:  the initial face-to-face interviews. For this interview, each candidate meets two committee members for dinner and a mini-tour of Pitman, the rectory, and our church. This is followed by a conversation/interview with the entire committee, once again in our conference room. We moved out the tables and sat in a circle, if you are wondering how we all fit! Again we used questions contributed by the whole committee, and answered many questions from the candidates, with all of us participating actively in the conversation.

These initial face-to-face interviews will be completed in August. We will move to the next phase in our discernment in September, when we will be sending teams of three committee members to visit and experience a Sunday worship service in the home parish setting of each of the candidates who remain in discernment with us.

July 2015 Discernment Committee Update

Good Shepherd’s official status on the Transition Ministry page of the Diocesan website has changed from “Receiving Names” to “Interviewing Candidates for Rector.” We are now getting to know a group of wonderful priests who have generously extended themselves to us. In turn, each of them is getting to know Good Shepherd through us. We are now very busy completing a series of telephone interviews, which will be followed by face-to-face interviews. This is a multilayered prayerful process. We are all very excited about this, but the details of this mutual discernment are completely confidential. In other words, we can’t tell you anything about the candidates. This is to protect the privacy of each candidate, the integrity of the process, and the health of our parish. We appreciate your understanding and respect of this confidentiality in your conversations with members of the Discernment Committee.

June 2015 Discernment Committee Update

This is a very exciting time for Good Shepherd! We are currently “Receiving Names” for new rector, which means that our Office of Transition Ministry at the Diocese of New Jersey is gathering the documents of prospective rectors who have inquired about our parish. Meanwhile, we have been busy preparing to review candidate portfolios and interview the candidates. In May we met with our Diocesan Transition Ministry Officer, Canon Cecilia Alvarez, for an orientation about the interviewing process. We also attended a Diocesan Anti-Racism Workshop at St. Peter’s Church in Clarksboro. Father Dave, Canon Alvarez, and many  of our Vestry members attended this valuable workshop as well. We are grateful to the parishioners of St. Peter’s who opened their doors as hosts and welcomed us for the workshop.

This week we will meet with Canon Alvarez to receive the candidate portfolios gathered so far. We are ready! Our Portfolio is posted on the national search database of the OTM, and an abbreviated version appears on the regional recruiting database of the Transition Ministry Conference network.

New Consecration Sunday!

Sunday, June 14th is New Consecration Sunday at Good Shepherd! This will mark the culmination of our new annual stewardship campaign. There will be a bountiful luncheon in the Good Shepherd tradition to follow the 10 am service. New Consecration Sunday is a stewardship education program which teaches stewardship from a spiritual perspective rather than from a fund-raising perspective: the emphasis is on the need for individual disciples to Give rather than the church’s need to Receive. This new stewardship program has been adopted and embraced by our Vestry, especially during our transition. When we welcome our new Rector we will have already completed our stewardship program for 2016! What a blessing!  Our guest preacher on New Consecration Sunday will be The Rev. Canon Rob Droste, Canon for Congregational Development and Mission for the Diocese of New Jersey. Stay tuned for more information in the next few weeks.

Receiving Names: May 2015 Discernment Committee Update

Saturday, May 2 and Sunday, May 3, 2015

My name is Mark Nicolle, and I am the Chair of the Good Shepherd Discernment Committee. We are 17 members of our parish who are conducting the search for our new rector. I want to give you an important update on where we are in this process. As you may have heard before, this kind of discernment process, a search for a new RECTOR, typically lasts about a year, give or take. For our parish this process began in late September of last year. We are 7 months in. AND, we have just reached a significant milestone in the process.

During this past week, we officially entered into a “Receiving Names” status with the Diocese of New Jersey. This means…

  • all the pertinent information about our parish is “out there” in all the appropriate places, and
  • the Office of Transition Ministry at the diocese is starting to collect names and information about prospective candidates.

During the past 7 months, our committee was formed, and has BEEN, in a process of discerning who we are as a parish, and getting that down on paper …what I have been calling the “describe ourselves” phase. Now the “DISCERNMENT” going on has NOT just been on the part of the Discernment Committee, but it has included the following steps along the way…

The first big discernment in this process was on the part of the Vestry who DISCERNED that every parish member who submitted their name to be a part of the committee, 17 people, should be included ON the committee.  THAT is NOT conventional wisdom! That is a LARGE committee!! But I can attest to you, as the person chairing that wild west show, it was absolutely the right thing, I truly believe that the Vestry discerned the will of the Holy Spirit in doing so. And because it is such a caring, wise, mature and invested group of parishioners, it really has NOT been a wild west show.

Next, the Vestry discerned who should be our interim rector, Fr. Dave Snyder.  And that is your vestry batting 1000.

Next, the committee reached out to the parish members, with the assistance of Canon Cecilia Alvarez, who “runs” the Office of Transition Ministry for the Diocese of NJ, to gather information about who we are, what is important to us as a parish. You may have taken part in the wonderful “congregational conversation” held in October.

The Vestry formed a new Website Committee to better support the wonderful work that Maureen Wynkoop continues to do as our Parish Webmaster … and we now have a new and improved website. Rich Harrington has championed this cause, working with Maureen and the new Website Committee and together they have provided an outstanding tool to support the work of the Discernment Committee, and to help make our parish shine in the “E” world.

Meanwhile, during all this time, the Discernment Committee has been busy composing three documents, with the help of many parish members outside of the committee. These three documents include:
1) An OTM Portfolio which goes onto a National Recruiting Data Base (this included the 12 questions for which some of you provided your own thoughts).
2) Second, there is a much smaller, yet similar document that goes onto a more regional recruiting database. (think zip recruiter dot com)
3) And third, as a capstone, it includes a Parish Profile document which has been posted onto our website.

This Parish Profile, which the committee is extremely proud of, is a 9 page document which talks about our parish, our strengths, our challenges, and several features and aspects of our parish that make us who we are. These documents entailed hours of work, discussion, debate and agreement by the committee, and have all been reviewed and approved by the Vestry. All of these documents will also be posted in some “bulletin board” fashion coming very soon to a parish hall near you, to make it easy for you to see “what is out there” about our parish. I MUST mention a few names of folks outside the committee who have contributed to all these efforts. First, an extremely talented Jeff Bathurst produced the beautiful parish profile document, compiling all the pictures and written materials from probably 20 different authors and contributors and assimilating it all, beautifully, into ONE VOICE, one fabulous document for people to see on our website. Other folks who have rallied around this committee with their time, talents, thoughts and support,in ADDITION to the families of the committee members themselves, include … Maryanne Charlton (our parish administrator), Len Fedullo, Kelly Lynd, Maureen Wynkoop, Lee Braidwood, Claude Coulson, Fr. Dave, and again, Jeff Bathurst.

What is next? Over the next 4 weeks, while the OTM office at the Diocese collects names of prospective rectors who are interested in our parish, we, the committee, will be receiving a deeper orientation from Canon Alvarez about the “interviewing process.” Our committee will be joining with St. Peter’s Parish in Clarksboro, also in Discernment for a new rector, to attend an Anti-Racism Workshop provided by the Diocese for all parishes going through this discernment process. During this time, we will be planning our approach to reviewing and talking to prospective candidates. We hope to be getting names during the first week of June.

April 2015 Discernment Committee Update

April will mark the turning point in our transition process. We will completely finalize the two documents that will describe our church to prospective rectors: our Portfolio for the Office of Transition Ministry (OTM) website will be sent to Canon Alvarez at the Diocese, and our Parish Profile will be added to our own website. The OTM Portfolio has already been approved by the Vestry and the Parish Profile is currently under Vestry review. Praise God!

We have been blessed with the help of parishioners outside the Discernment Committee to create the Parish Profile. Claude Coulson wrote a description of our Rectory and buildings. Lee Braidwood provided the financials. Len Fedullo and Kelly Lynd created a gallery of wonderful photographs. The Vestry wrote and adopted a Mission Statement for Good Shepherd. The Discernment Committee tackled the rest of the writing, which included open discussions about the challenges our parish faces and the goals we have for the future. Finally, Jeff Bathurst is putting everything together as our Parish Profile designer/editor. Jeff is creating a beautiful “picture” of Good Shepherd in an engaging and professional format. We will soon share it with the whole congregation!

Our fabulous new website is live! The website is a collaborative work in progress, as such it will never be finished. All of us are now part of this collaboration: our Webmaster, Website Committee, and Parish Administrator will depend on input from the entire parish to keep it updated and fresh. We have reached the end of the self-description phase of our transition. We have been blessed with great teamwork, open discussion, and welcome support from the parish. All of this is testimony to God’s presence among us at Good Shepherd! We are about to enter the next phase of the search when we will begin to consider who God has called for our next rector. March 2015 Discernment Committee Update

In March we are working to complete both our Portfolio for the Office of Transition Ministry (OTM) website and the Parish Profile for our own website, the two documents that will describe our church to prospective rectors. When both documents are complete, we will be able to move on to the next phase of the search. Our OTM Portfolio is now ready for Vestry review and feedback. Our Parish Profile is well underway. The Profile allows more room for creativity to describe our worship, our activities and fellowship, and photographs to express the spirit of Good Shepherd. To create the Parish Profile, we are receiving help from parishioners outside the Discernment Committee with specific knowledge or expertise, and we have asked the Vestry to write a Mission Statement for Good Shepherd.

Supporting these two documents will be our exciting new website. The Website Committee currently includes Sue Dixon, Len Fedullo, Deb Prieto, Chelsea Richmond,  and Tom Rigg under the leadership of Rich Harrington and Webmaster Maureen Wynkoop. Look for announcements about this in the coming weeks!

Despite the snow and slush on Photo Day, Kelly Lynd captured wonderful images.  You may spot Len Fedullo with his camera quietly taking additional photos during upcoming services, in Sunday School, and behind the scenes. The photos will appear in our Parish Profile and on our website. Thanks to our photographers!

The self-description phase of our transition has taught us patience and collaboration. It is opening our hearts to the possibilities ahead of us. We all value the prayers and patience of the parish and as always welcome questions and input.

February 2015 Discernment (“Search”) Committee Update

In February we turn our full focus to our Parish Profile, which will be a supplementary document on our website that will replace the printed booklet published to inform prospective candidates that some of you may remember from searches past. The Parish Profile allows more room for creativity, so it may include more than the OTM Portfolio to describe our worship, our activities and fellowship, and photographs to express the essence of Good Shepherd. To create the different parts of the Parish Profile, we are working as individuals and in small groups informed by brainstorming sessions with the full committee. In addition we have asked for help from parishioners outside the Discernment Committee with specific knowledge or expertise. This exemplifies the sort of joyful collaboration at the heart of our wonderful parish.

In response to the needs of the Discernment Committee and the transition process, a Vestry initiative led to the formation of a new Website Committee which is enthusiastically working behind the scenes to revise our website under the leadership of Rich Harrington. At the same time, our webmaster Maureen Wynkoop is also maintaining our existing website where there is now a page with monthly Discernment Committee updates. The Website Committee currently includes Sue Dixon, Len Fedullo, Chelsea Richmond, Tom Rigg, Deb Prieto, and Jim Wynkoop in addition to Rich Harrington and Maureen Wynkoop. Thanks to everyone involved in this exciting new project!

January 2015 Discernment (“Search”) Committee Update

Our January meetings brought us close to completing work on our Portfolio for the Office of Transition Ministry (OTM) website. Informed by parish responses to each of the 4 Conversation Questions that Canon Alvarez presented at the November Parish meetings as well as earlier responses contributed by Vestry members and parishioners, we divided into small workgroups to draft answers to the twelve questions in the OTM Portfolio. The full committee has reviewed each of the answers drafted by our small workgroups. Utilizing this feedback the answers are being revised and prepared to submit to the Vestry for review. We also gathered additional data required for the Portfolio, such as financial information, Sunday school registration, average Saturday and Sunday attendance, etc. The OTM Portfolio will represent our church to priests who are registered with the OTM and are in search of a parish.

We implemented a full Communication Plan to keep the parish updated. The plan includes updates in the Crook bimonthly, parish emails monthly, service leaflet inserts every two weeks, periodic announcements during services, and a page on our website with all of the updates in an ongoing format.

December 2014 Discernment (“Search”) Committee Update

We began our ministry by coordinating the visit from Canon Cecilia Alvarez with Parish Meetings on November 8 and 9. As a result we have approximately 80 sets of answers from parishioners to each of the 4 Conversation Questions that Canon Alvarez presented. We have synthesized these index card responses into a workable format that we will use to guide us at each step along the way. What a blessing!

On November 19, the Discernment Committee met again with Canon Alvarez for a detailed discussion of the entire discernment process with guidelines and tools from the Diocese of NJ. We are grateful to Canon Alvarez for this.

During our worship services on December 13 and 14, Father Dave led a liturgy for the installation of the members of the Discernment Committee. Thanks Father Dave!

During our December meetings the focus of our work is our Portfolio for the Office of Transition Ministry (OTM) website which, when completed, will represent our parish to priests who are registered with the OTM and are in search of a parish.
